San Francisco
by David Dolphin on Aug.14, 2006, under Abroad, America, California, San Fransisco
Up early due to being out of sync.
Went to Lefty O’Douls for breakfast and had an amazing Spanish omlette. If your in the area you should check it out.
Next was a Tram trip during which we saw all the major sights, Union square, Alcatraz, Pier 39, Lombard Street, etc.
Then I went off and got Route 66 for the 6680 we have with us. Setup was quite easy though we had to turn off hidden in Bluetooth so the GPS receiver would pick it.
Its only thrown us off twice, and I only blame it for one of them:
- On the freeway we were on was under roadworks and so it though we had taken an Exit when infact we hadn’t though we were back on track within 15 seconds.
- The second time it thought we were in the middle of a block when we were driving down a road. This time it took about 30 seconds to recover and get us back on track which nearly caused a crash as the spoken instructions were way off.
Two other things are:
- It’d be nice if there was an option (though there may be one I haven’t found) where it gives a “bong” and a second of a pause before the voice instructions are issued as a few times we missed an exit due to talking in the car and missing the instruction.
- When you are coming to a pedestrian area it tells you something along the lines of: “In 100 meters, go straight ahead” which is slightly idiotic.
Took a tour around in the car and saw the Japanese Tea Gardens and the Golden Gate Bridge.
Had dinner in Sears and crashed out early again.
Mental Spew
by David Dolphin on Aug.13, 2006, under Abroad, America, California, Flying, San Fransisco
Flew over with Air Canada, ~1 hour Dublin to Shannon (I couldn’t find the Shannon Portal, sorry Steve), ~7 Hours Shannon to Toronto (During which time my sister Helena collapsed and had to be given oxygen. The Flight was AC894 on a 767. Helena was sitting in 37K and my dad had similar breathing problems around the same time in 37A, this would have been 5-6 hours into the flight) (also had the best Airplane food I’ve ever had on that flight, something very similar to 250 under Air Canada on AirlineMeals.net but with chicken) (another thing was that I asked for Mountain Dew and was told they didn’t have any “Mental Spew”!) then a few hours in Toronto airport before getting a ~5 hour flight to San Francisco.
A few things I’ve noticed; two advertismsents struck me, one was an Advertisement for Norton Anti-Virus on a freeway billboard and the second was for Cingular who were advertising that their network had the fewest dropped calls. It seemed strange that they were advertising this as in Ireland all mobile advertising seems to revolve around either price or a new feature (“Porting”, 3G, i-mode).
Finally crashed out in the hotel at an hour which was far too late by our body clocks.
